Ilayaraja is also a Instrumentalist, conductor, singer and a song writer. His career in this field is spanning over 30 years. He remains one of the most famous composers who emerged in India. He is being prominent in Tamil cinema over form 1970's.

He is a gold medalist in classical guitar form Trinity college of Music, London, in 1993. In 2003, according to BBC international poll, people form 155 countries voted his composition "Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu" form the movie Thalapathi of Super Star Rajinikanth, is in the forth of world 10 most popular songs.

He started his composing in 1976 in the movie from Annakilli to 2013 Neethane En Ponvasantham of Jeeva.
