Priya was born to Bhavani Shankar and Thangam Bhavani Shankar and her home town is Mayiladuthurai (Mayavaram). She was first noticed as a TV presenter in the tamil news channel Puthiya Thalaimurai. She later rose to fame through the Tamil drama Kalyanam Mudhal Kadhal Varai.
