Excitement for "The Fault in Our Stars" is Running High

The Fault in Our Stars, directed by Josh Boone and starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, doesn’t hit theaters till June 6 but, judging from the reaction to the trailer that was released this week, excitement for the film is running high.

Adapted from the John Green bestseller (and an EW Best Fiction of 2012 pick), TFIOS tells the story of two teenagers who meet in a cancer recovery group and fall in love. But, of course, for people familiar with the book, that plot description doesn’t begin to convey the depth, poignancy and humor in Green’s novel.

“It’s difficult to say to people, ‘go see this movie that’s about sick kids—you’re going to have a really good time,’” Green told EW. “But you are.

I think the answer is to make something that, even when it’s sad, is not depressing. The great thing about the trailer is that you emerge from watching it feeling invigorated and encouraged. And hopefully excited.”

Green saw the trailer about a month ago and admits he was nervous seeing footage from the film for the first time. “I couldn’t let myself feel anything other than anxiety until the last frame of the trailer where [Shailene] says ‘okay.’ Then I was like, yeaaaaah! I really loved it. It’s everything I wanted the trailer to be.”
