DBC, Robo Cop, Her, Lego, Nymphomaniac : Must Watch Movie in February

Written By Just 10 Media on 2/02/2014 | 19:23

With the Oscars fast approaching, filmmakers are cramming the last of their critically-lauded dramas into the schedules in an attempt to woo the Academy. Two of the films in the running for Best Picture are released in February, as well as a long-awaited '80s remake, the movie debut of the Lego franchise and over four hours of s_e_x in Lars von Triers's latest controversial effort.

Digital Spy rounds up the five must-see movies for February below...

Dallas Buyers Club Release | Date Feb 7 2014

Why you should see it: Nominated for Best Picture at this year's Oscars, this biographical drama tells the true story of Ron Woodroof, an AIDS patient given 30 days to live who starts selling unapproved medication that alleviates his symptoms. Matthew McConaughey scooped a Golden Globe for his turn as Woodroof, and watch out for Jared Leto's nuanced (and Oscar-nominated) performance as transgender woman Rayon.
Robo Cop : Release Date 07 Feb 2014

Why you should see it: This long-in-the-works remake of the classic '80s film stars Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy, who after being critically injured is rebuilt by robotics company OmniCorp as a crime-fighting cyborg. It won't be winning any Oscars, but who cares? Expect mammoth explosions, highly implausible chase scenes and Michael Keaton hamming it up as the villainous CEO of OmniCorp.
Her : Release Date 14 Feb 2014

Why you should see it: A very different kind of rom-com for Valentine's Day, Her finds Joaquin Phoenix as Theodore, a lonely man who develops feelings for his unspeakably s_e_x_y computer (Scarlett Johansson). It's had praise heaped on it and is nominated for several Oscars including Best Picture, but does it remind anyone else of that Big Bang Theory episode where Raj falls in love with Siri?
The Lego Movie : Release Date 14 Feb 2014

Why you should see it: Chris Pratt leads an all-star voice cast as Emmet, an ordinary Lego figure mistaken for the 'MasterBuilder' who can save the Lego universe. During his accidental quest he teams up with a wizard, a pirate, Abraham Lincoln and Batman to take down the evil Lord Business. Expect plenty of gags to keep kids laughing and some smarter humour that'll please the grown-ups.
Nymphomaniac : Release Date 22 Feb 2014

Why you should see it: With director Lars von Trier unable to cut the film any further, s_e_x epic Nymphomaniac runs to a mammoth four hours in total. Charlotte Gainsbourg stars as Joe, who recounts her past erotic encounters to a stranger who finds her beaten up in an alleyway. The two volumes of von Trier's film are being released simultaneously on Saturday, February 22 in the UK - just in case you fancy a weekend of wilfully provocative erotic drama.
