In the year 1930, the term disc jockey was coined. Playing jazz records for his guests, Jimmy Savile threw the World's first DJ dance party, in 1943. Savile was also the first man to use turntables so the music could play continuously, non-stop. Not long after, in Paris 1947, the first discoteque opened called Whiskey A-Go-Go.

"Disc Jockey", DJ for short, has come a long way from whence it originated and there are different versions of the term these days.

Mobile Disc Jockey
This type of DJ as its name implies, is mobile, they go where the party is. These DJS are able to play an immense range of music in any kind of event. They take all kinds of jobs such as receptions, charity events, corporate events, birthday parties, dance parties, name it. They can be playing music for a wedding reception one night and playing loud, dance disco music in another. They are versatile and can blend in with any kind of occasion.

These jack-of-all-trade deejays are equipped with turntables, sound systems, lighting rigs, speakers, mikes, smoke machines, laser lights, and all kinds of gadgets that can keep a party going to wee hours in the morning. They have a van or a mini bus to hold all the equipment and they travel to the venue of where their client wants the party to be. They are at the venue way before guests arrive to setup everything and do a dry run to test the sounds. Included in the package is their emceeing for the party and often, these kind of services they offer extend to their becoming event coordinators because setting up an event is second nature to them, being honed and tested.

Club DJs
This kind of DJs is usually in-house, employed by the club on a regular basis. They can have alternates, depending on what the club owner thinks is best, with each DJ having their own special skills, sometimes bringing their own music with them. However, the music equipment is also in-house, though if there are special effects that the DJ owns and is willing to use during their shift, that is allowed too. Disco DJ's are adept at mixing music where the end of one song transitions smoothly into the beginning of another. In this manner, the music is continuous and the dancing can go on all night with no interruption. It's an art to be learned. They control the volume of the music too, increasing and decreasing for emphasis.

Radio DJ
Well, we all know what radio DJs are. They play music and talk in between songs. They provide you with updated news and keep you company when you are lonely. There are different kinds of Radio DJs, some who take calls on air and give advice, some are into comedy and crack jokes left and right, you even have religious DJs who play spiritual songs, name it, the

They are the ones everybody hears in some radio station playing songs from their computers while they tell news, general gibberish, or stories to keep you entertained. Sure they take requests, but they spend more time talking than actually deejaying since they just choose songs from their pc to be played automatically while they control advertisements.

Hip Hop DJ
These deejays make their music on the spot with the use of various turntables, CDJs, and mixers. They sometimes use pre-recorded music that they mix to create new tunes or to change pace. Most of them have an effects disc that has a wide range of samples to overlay on top of the pre-recorded ones.

There are also record label, battle, and internet DJs in MTV channels. You have internet radio too. And then you have what they call an in-house radio in establishments (mostly pubs and some restaurants), where you can request your kind of music while having a meal, or drinking a beer. There still may be some other kind of DJ not mentioned here, people make their own variations and as long as it works for their businesses, they go for it! Welcome to the world of DeeJaying!
