Nazriya Nazeem and Fahad Fazil

Malayalam actress Nazriya Nazeem and actor Fahad Fazil have just announced their engagement. The alliance was first arranged and then ‘love happened’, says Nazriya. Real life romances are not new in South Indian cinema.

Ajith & Salini

This talented and good-looking star pair fell in love on the sets of ‘Amarkalam’. After a brief courtship, they married in 2000. Shalini was a Protestant and Ajith’s father was a Brahmin, but the issue of religion did not come in the way of their marriage. After marriage, Shalini, who has featured in such hit films as Maniratnam’s ‘Alaipayuthey’, quit acting and decided to be a full-time homemaker. She does, however, pursue her passion for badminton. The couple has a five-year-old daughter, Anoushka. Ajith has often said that a successful man needs a peaceful and stable environment at home which Shalini creates for him.

Mahesh Babu and Namrata Shirodkar

It took only one film for Cupid to strike. Tollywood top star Mahesh Babu and Namrata Shirodkar met on the sets of ‘Vamsi’ in 2000. A little after that they fell in love, but kept their relationship under wraps until they were married in 2005. Namrata gave up films soon after and has said, ‘Mahesh didn’t want a working wife’. They have two children, Gautam – who has just made his debut as a child artiste in his dad’s film ‘1: Nenokkadine’ – and Sitara.

Nagarjuna & Amala

The young Amala worked with Nagarjuna in films like ‘Kirai Dada’, ‘Siva’ and ‘Nirnayam’. They fell in love and Nagarjuna, who was married at the time, divorced to marry Amala. The actress quit films after her marriage in 1992, but made a comeback in the 2012 Telugu film ‘Life is Beautiful’. The couple’s son, Akhil, has also made his entry into films.

Suriya and Jyothika

This is another of Kollywood’s most glamorous star couples. Suriya and Jyothika are said to have been attracted even during their early films together such as ‘Poovellam Kettuppaar’. By the time they did Gautham Menon’s ‘Kaakka Kaakka’ they were in a steady relationship. Apparently, there was some resistance to their marriage from Suriya’s father, the veteran actor Sivakumar, but the couple stayed firm and married in 2006. Like Shalini, Jyothika, too, gave up films after marriage. She and Suriya do TV commercials together. They have two children – Diya and Dev.

Sundar C & Kushboo

The feisty Kushboo was strong in the face of relationship troubles, too. She emerged from a long affair with a leading Kollywood actor which ended badly to rebuild her life with actor-director Sundar C. Together they manage their production houses and while Kushboo is not so active on the big screen she’s carved a niche for herself in TV. Kushboo and Sundar have two teenage daughters.

Suhasini and Maniratnam

By their own admission, it was their passion for cinema that brought them together.  When they first met, Suhasini was already an established actress but says she was conservative and traditional. ‘I didn’t wish to be linked to man I wasn’t married to,’ she said. And they were married.  While they have their separate careers, they also collaborate on various projects. Suhasini and Maniratnam have a son, Nandan.

Bhagyaraj &  Purnima

Actor-director Bhagyaraj’s 1984 film ‘Darling, Darling’ was aptly titled. During the making of the film, Bhagyaraj, whose wife Praveena, also an actress, had died the previous year, proposed to Purnima. The couple has one of the steady, much-admired marriages in Kollywood. They have two children, Saranya and Shantanu, both of who have dabbled in films.

Sneha & Prasanna

Sneha and Prasanna were married in a star-studded ceremony in 2012; it was also covered extensively in the media, including on TV. The couple met while working together on the 2009 film ‘Achamundu Achamundu’ and began to date steadily after that. Sneha continues to work after marriage and the couple also does brand endorsements together.

Dhanush & Aishwarya

Dhanush married Aishwarya, the daughter of Rajnikanth, in 2004, when he was just 21. She was a couple of years older than him. At the time, Dhanush said he knew Aishwarya through his sister and that the marriage was arranged by the elders in both families. Aishwarya made her directorial debut with ‘3’ in which her husband was cast as the hero. Asked about being the great Rajni’s son-in-law, Dhanush has said it’s a relationship of mutual respect and that they give each other space. Dhanush and Aishwarya have two boys – Yatra and Linga.
