Verdict - “Malini 22 Palayamkottai” could have been a revenge story served cold, but it only turns out to be an average effort.

A critically acclaimed film in Malayalam, Sripriya’s ‘Malini 22 Palayamkottai’ is an average revenge saga that fails to recreate the impact the original had left. You can’t help but start comparing it with the original because it’s strikingly similar in its presentation as well as execution. But considering this is a revenge story told from the perspective of a woman, it might appeal to the audience, at least to those who haven’t watched the original.

Malini, played by Nithya, is a nurse who aspires to make it big in life. She falls in love with Varun and they dream of a happily ever after kind of a story. But Prakash has a sadistic agenda for his ladylove, and with the help of his partner in crime, Prakash, he conspires Malini into a scheme that eventually lands her in jail. From then on, how Malini longs to take revenge on both forms the crux of the story.

If there’s one thing that goes right in this film, then it ought to be Nithya Menon, whom I consider one of the highly talented actresses in southern cinema. She takes on her role with utmost ease and confidence that’s evident in scenes pre and post interval. Her transformation from the ‘hunted’ to the ‘hunter’ is commendable. I think it was very smart of Sripriya to cast Nithya, because this film more than anything needed a very strong female lead, and it has one in Malini. I doubt if anyone else could have pulled off this role with the vigor with which Nithya performed.

The revenge episode becomes little cinematic in the second half. I wouldn’t call it over-the-top, but I don’t think Tamil audience would appreciate it with a pinch of salt. The fact that we are reminded that it’s a revenge story and, therefore, in the climax the protagonist utters lines to justify her actions is a turn off and kills the tension built by the narrative till then. I still don’t understand why we always have to face these preachy lines thrown at us towards the end of most Indian films. It’s like as though the director and the protagonist wanted to deliver a sermon to the audience. 

Besides Nithya, debutant Krish and Telugu actor Naresh turn in good performances. Both of them play characters with hidden agenda and they were quite convincing at it. While the first half is fun and progresses at a very brisk pace, the second one struggles due to erratic narrative. Music is passable while the camera by Manoj Pillai stands out.

In essence, “Malini 22 Palayamkottai” could have been a revenge story served cold, but it only turns out to be an average effort.
