STORY:
Jayakodi Thevar (Murugan) is the village bigwig and he has two wives (Viji Chandrasekar as Sevanamma and Prema as Ammu).
The first wife receives the full support of her brother Veerathevar (Vela Ramamurthy) and she has got a son too.
And the second wife has has a son Parthi (Kathir) and a daughter Deepa. As the old man dies, a war erupts between the two families. What follows is a bloody climax.
ANALYSIS:
Madhayaanai Koottam is yet another movie based in the milieu of Madurai, with violence, revenge and bloodshed as its theme.
The narration and charecterisation fail to strike a chord with the audience and it has to be seen whether it would be understood/liked by all sections.
But no other Kollywood movie in the recent past has portrayed death and the rituals surrounding it (called as 'seimurai' in southern districts) in such a detailed manner.
Newcomer Kathir performs well as a Theni youngster, while Oviya, as a Kerala girl, oozes beauty and glamour. Viji Chandrasekar is the show-stealer with a solid performance.
Rahul Dharman's cinematography gives that raw-effect to the movie. Raghunanthan's background score maintains suspense, while his songs are okay.
Madhayaanai Koottam has its own moments, which provide us some tense and gripping sequences. But that's not enough for a complete experience.
On the whole, Vikram Sukumaran is good as a writer, but should improve as a director. We hope him to do it in his second movie.
