When Ajith's Mankatha set the box office on fire in 2011, word spread that a sequel was in the offing. However, after waiting for two years, director Venkat Prabhu has officially announced that the sequel to Mankatha may not happen any time soon.
"If I plan to direct a sequel to Mankatha, I will do it sometime later. The news that sequel will go on the floors shortly is false," the hit film-maker said. The director is busy promoting his next movie Biriyani, which features Karthi and Hansika Motwani as the lead pair. Consequently, rumours spread that Venkat Prabhu's next project is the sequel to Mankatha.
Interestingly, following the success of the Ajith-starrer, discussions were held to make the sequel. Apparently, Venkat Prabhu had even written the story for the sequel and narrated it to Ajith, who was impressed with it. However, because of many reasons, the sequel did not take off.
By then, Ajith had already signed Billa II and Arrambam. It was widely expected that he would allot dates for the sequel of Mankatha in 2014. However, belying expectations, Ajith took up Veeram. After Veeram, he will start shooting for an action flick with ace film-maker Goutham Menon. That means Ajith's schedule for 2014 is packed. If at all the sequel to Mankatha happens in 2015, the gap would be almost four years. Normally, trade pundits avoid sequels that have a huge gap.
"The sequel to Mankatha is not happening because of any particular reason, but for the fact that certain aspects did not fall into the place at the right time. The sequel might happen because Ajith too is interested in the project. But it will not happen in 2014 for sure," a source close to the director said.
Once Venkat Prabhu frees himself from the responsibilities of Biriyani, he might take up a small-budget movie, featuring new faces. However, the director has kept the details of the project under wraps.
