British Officer Robert Clive is the person who introduced
postal service in India in 1706. The postal service is first introduced to
serve English East India Company for their communication. Later in 1837 it was
introduce for public for the distribution and collection of letters. In 1852,
the first stamp has been introduced, which is printed with Sind civilization (Now
its Pakistan). In 1954 postal service has introduce for circulating throughout
India. At present there are more than 1,50,000 post offices in India, to serve
the public.
At present the department serving public by collecting more
than 120 million per day. There are more than 37000 telegram offices. There are
more than 16000 post offices in Towns and 1,34,000 post offices all over India.
There are more than 5,25,000 postal letter collection boxes.
In 1984 the facility of trunk call has been introduced in
cities like Chennai, Kolkata, Bombay and Chennai. By now it has extended throughout
India for more than 28 cities. The postal department now serving with a quick
delivery of letters which is introduced on 15 August 1972, which aids the department
to deliver its service in faster manner. On 1st April 1986 the department has
introduced the aided service for the public called "Speed Post"
Now the department aids in serving its customer through
Speed Post by delivering the letters within 24 hours to any part in India. For
this stamp a special charges will be collected no Stamps required. Like this,
the letter from India. Will reach to 60 countries within 48 hours after
posting. Postal department has direct connection with 44 countries which is
connected through satellite and about 104 countries which has been connected through
trunk facility.
