Brain-Eating Amoeba Found in Water Sampling Station - Be Safe

According to state health officials, a potentially fatal brain-eating amoeba has been found in the St. Bernard Parish Water System. The system provides water to over 44,000 people, and now it is being purified. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) informed officials in addition to the water system.

According to a statement from the DHH, "One positive test was at a site at the water treatment plant before the water was treated. The second positive test occurred at 948 Angela Street, which may have been contaminated by ground water due to a leak at the sampling station".

As per Dave Peralta, parish president, they think that something hit the sampling station and fissured the pipe in the sampling station and it is believed that some contamination of the water was there; this water was collected around the sampling station. So the problem is not there in the water line, it is there in sampling station.

As per Olivia Hwang, a DHH spokeswoman, the health department is asking for conducting chlorine burn for 60 days to make sure that any remaining amoeba in the system are removed. With help of the chlorine burn, biofilm could be reduced in the water system and it will also kill the amoeba.

As per Peralta, the burn could not be necessarily needed, however in order to become more cautious, they will be doing it. She added that the burn began at 6 am on Thursday. So far, there are no cases of infection.
